Foundations for Social Change: Reflections on Ontario’s Poverty Reduction Strategy
Abstract
Pedro Barata and Colette Murphy were responsible for Economic Justice / Poverty Reduction programs in two Toronto-based private charitable foundations (the Atkinson Charitable Foundation and the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, respectively) during the period surrounding the Ontario government’s 2008 commitment to a formal Poverty Reduction Strategy (roughly 2007 to 2010). In this article, they draw on key dynamics they experienced as funders, partners, and advocates during that period to reflect on an “emergence of change” paradigm and outline promising practices that foundations – and other advocates – may draw on to contribute to social change. Pedro Barata et Colette Murphy étaient responsables de programmes de justice économique et de réduction de la pauvreté au sein de deux fondations caritatives privées établies à Toronto (respectivement l’Atkinson Charitable Foundation et la George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation) au moment où le gouvernement de l'Ontario a pris, en 2008, l'engagement officiel d’adopter une stratégie de réduction de la pauvreté (de 2007 à 2010, approximativement). Dans cet article, ils tirent parti des dynamiques clés qu'ils ont observées au cours de cette période en tant que bailleurs de fonds, partenaires et porte-parole pour réfléchir au paradigme de l’« émergence du changement » et définir des pratiques prometteuses que les fondations et autres acteurs pourraient utiliser pour contribuer au progrès social.

PERMISSION REQUEST/ARCHIVING
